Introducing variety of things about Nagoya and other places to go in Japan

Japanese Fortune Charm/ Amulet “OMAMORI”

Japanese act very unique way regarding religions.

Majority of people in Japan belong to either Buddhism or Shintoism organization. However, many people do not act against other regions.

As many people are blessed at a Shrine for their birth, celebrate Christmas, and go to Buddhism temple to pray.

For younger generations, religious monuments are more like historical arts.

Japanese fortune charms or Amulet “OMAMORI” are sold at Shintoism Shrines. Interest thing is that there are many shrines recognized to bring different fortunes such as good health, passing exams (especially high-school and universities), business success, pregnancy, safe driving, etc.

Stylish Way to Wear Kimono

You may well know or at least heard about KIMONO (the Japanese Traditional Clothing).

You may think Japanese female were KIMONO all the time.
But most of them only wear at special occasions such as
the Collage Graduation Ceremony, the Adult ceremony
(country-wide ceremony for 20 years olders)

Although the traditional way to ware KIMONO is very beautiful
and exotic, it is not the only way to ware KIMONO.

Especially in Western Countries, women ware KIMNO for fashin.
They enjoy wearing it as a pretty outerwear.

Japanese Traditional Shoes called Zori and Geta are also
worn un-traditional way now.

Western clothing and Japanese Geta and Zori match pretty well.

Don Quixote Really Sell the Most Reasonably?

  1. Are Don Quixote (Donki)’s prices
    really lowest?

I wanted to know,too.

So I picked up drags to compare
with other discount pharmacies.

I picked 2 other pharmacies.

One is a country wide popular shop
called “Sugi Drug”

The other is Nagoya’s most reasonable pharmacy called “Senrima Drag Store”.

1.”Donki”

2.”Senrima”

3.”Sugi Drug”

img_7985

Although “Donki” is not a pharmacy, 4 items out of 5 common
are cheapest at “Donki”.

But do not forget to look for the ones with yellow
advertizement papers.

“Don Quixote” “ドンキ・ホーテ” the Cheepest Shopping Store

“Don Quixote” (Donki) is the king of Discount Store.
renderedcontent-cf45ae5b-dc44-4f2d-ab2c-429d38c0acb0
It is not a Wholesale Store like Costco.
They use all kinds of method to buy items cheap such as out of out of business shops, outlets,
parallel importers, etc.

You can find things from electronic device like
Big Screen TV to fresh tofu.

But be careful!

The way they make money is to offer you items with very
low price (they actually show selling prices of nearby shops)

If there is not competition, they may sell you for
the listing price.

So if you think everything is cheap and buy without
closely look at the price, you may end up paying more
than nearby discount shops.

Then how do you know you are getting big discount.

Look for yellow tags like these.

Most likely you may be buying the cheapest you can buy
around that area.

Also highly discounted goods are displayed in front of the shop.
That means goods you see in front of the shop are
also good buys.

If you are thinking to purchase electrical goods,
be careful about the Electrical Code Standards.

Most likely, what you buy in Japan won’t be able to be used in
your country.

If you are to purchase electrical devises, you may buy ones that use common
batteries like Japanese Made Wireless Earphone.
renderedcontent-6972f511-7d58-4099-9c5f-9a38b70c81e7
Recently Japanese Electrical Appliances are not as strong as before.
And foreigners do not come to buy SONYs and Panasonics.

Donki has been developing its own no-brand electrical goods
with Japanese local small companies.

You may be surprised that some Japanese made goods are less expensive
than imported like from China. The quality? Please guess.

Anyways, Donki has variety of goods. They do not waste any space.
So you may be surprised how stacked goods are to each other.

You can also buy souvenir at Donki.
The most popular one is Matcha snacks. Too many kinds you can find.

Also Japanese Anime Characters. Don’t worry they are not pirates.

Jpanaese nifes. (expecially “Seki Made”)

It’s bulky but there are so many kinds of cup nopodles.

Japanese stationallies are also very popular.

Watches, Makeups, Candies, Medicins

I would say Donki is a toy shop for adults.

Nara Station Shopping Arcade

One of my favorite things when visiting new places is visiting the shopping arcade.

Right next to the Kintetsu Nara Station, there is a shopping arcade.

The characteristics of this arcade are the following:

1. You cannot use credit cards in a lot of shops and restaurant.
Therefore, you need to prepare a little more cash with you than usual.
I did not feel that in large cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, etc.

2. Cost performance is good in Morning set (breakfast).
You can find many places to have breakfast including drink and bread in one coin (500yen).

Also you can find a lot of tasty food.

3. There are not so many souvenir shops and Nara specific goods.
I want to see more incenses, potteries, etc.
I can’t really tell what is really Nara spatiality goods.

Yonago(Tottori Prefecture)

I visited “Yonago ” in Tottori prefecture.
It is a very quiet town.
However, you can visit 25 minuts by train (Minato Liner) to visit “KITARO ROAD” that is street with a lot of Japanese Famous Monster Monuments.
img_6176

img_6177
You can also visit Tottori Sakyu (Tottori Sand Beach) by train.
It takes about an hour by train.
renderedcontent-132ec1f2-f7f1-4c84-8fda-11a098a5ea3e
Yonago is a very quiet Town. I stayef in the “Washington Hotei”.
This Hotel is a very clean hotel, and cheep.

image
Also I stayed at the Super Hotel. This hotel is very environmental-kind hotel. Also very cheep, too.

It is less than 6,000yen per night.

Room size is large enough for one person.

I would have visited “Daisen” a mountain that looks like Mt. Fuji.

Because of that this mountain is often referred as “Houki Fuji”
since this area used to be called “Houki Town.

“Daisen” is rated as 3rd beautiful mountain
after Mt. Fuji and “Yarigatake” in Nagano prefecture.
renderedcontent-a95693ce-315b-454a-85f3-96804667a299
Daisen is also designated as a National Park.
There are various rare plants.
You can take a buss from the Yonago Station.
It takes about 50 minutes by buss and 30 minutes by taxi.

Takayama (Town of Sake Makers)

Today’s Takayama is warm 12 ℃。

Takayama is a town with a lot of Sake Makers.
Many old houses are preserved like old time.
image
No more snow now.

Takayama in snow is beautifu ,but without snow is easier to walk around.

Subway in Nagoya

If you visit Nagoya, you may not to worry about the transportation.

We have variety of ways.

Within Nagoya city you can use the subway to go to most of the places you want to go.
renderedcontent-ab85ff39-c920-4e71-a8a5-84c4b77d4fa8
We have 4 major lines to cover almost entire Nagoya.
renderedcontent-6973d247-96ac-430d-9dec-198cae4f8e78
4 different colors mean 4 different lines.

Nagoya ‘s subway system is not as complicated
as Tokyo or Osaka.

and subway stations are kept clean.
renderedcontent-00c0a90b-bd09-4fdd-8de6-b726784788a3
But you should avoid commuting times like between 7:00 & 9:00 and 4:30&6:30.

Trains are extremely crowded with business people and students.

Some stations have protection gates for people not to
fall down from the platform also to avoid people to jump in.
renderedcontent-27699ec0-f9e4-48e6-a785-547f42a6a4d5

We have many train accidents every year,
and these gates helps decreasing such incidents.

Such gates are slowly increasing.

Ohsukannon

Nagoya’s 2 famous spots are the “Nagoya Castle” and the “Ohsu Kannon”.

Today I am introducing the “Oshu Kannon”.
Ohsukannon

The “Ohsu Kannon” is a popular Buddhist temple in central Nagoya. Originally built during the Kamakura Period (1192-1333)

Otsu shopping arcade is a huge and popular shopping area containing over 1,200 shops and restaurants. All kinds of shops, including electrical appliance shops, secondhand clothing stores, Juelly shops, Duty Free Shop and l0ts of various regional restaurants are there.

It used to be streets to get to the temple. Many shops opened to attract people who come to the temple to pray.

As much as I remember, until 10 years ago, it was a lasted town. Only some souvenir shops and hardware stores, as well as pottery shops were there.

Of cause if you like the Japanese-Subculture “Animation” (Anime) hello, you can become the person in the Anime and can walk around the arcade feeling like you are the one.

Take pictures with many friends.

You will see many foreigners like you. You can become friends in a second…

Especially people who would like to buy Japanese Rice Cooker , this is the
place you should go to because they have not only duty free items but also
ones fit to your country’s electricity situation.

Blossom Scattering Rain

Today is probably the last day to see full blooming cherry blossoms.

This “Blossom Scattering Rain” that we call “Hana Chirashi no Ame” will blow most of the blossoms.

Then here comes green leaves and leaf eating poisones caterpillars.
renderedcontent-26af8630-be48-428b-9d04-10abffe330be

Cherry blossoms are beautiful, but seeing
tons of dropped caterpillars makes people feeling very yakky.

I wish I could see petals falling a little bit longer.

It’s like light pink snow covering entire world.
